Dear Esteemed Members, Friends of the Asia Pacific Gemmologists Society (APGS), and Industry Colleagues,
As we step into the New Year of 2025, I would like to extend my heartfelt wishes and sincere gratitude to all of you on behalf of the Asia Pacific Gemmologists Society (APGS). Your unwavering trust and enthusiastic support throughout the past year have enabled us to continue making a meaningful impact, advancing the industry, fostering academic exchanges, and promoting collaboration.
Reflecting on 2024, we, together with all of you, witnessed a challenging year for the jewellery industry and academic field in the Asia-Pacific region, with Hong Kong serving as a key representative. In the face of these challenges, we rose to the occasion, fully leveraging Hong Kong’s advantages as a global jewellery hub, particularly in terms of industry resources and international engagement. We were honoured to host internationally renowned gemmologists and antique jewellery experts, such as Dr. Jack Ogden and esteemed Fei Cui/Jadeite expert Mr. Samuel Kung, to lead a series of professional events and discussions, including antique jewellery and jadeite appreciation sessions. These events fostered valuable academic exchange and collaboration with gemmological organisations and experts from around the world.
Moreover, we actively strengthened our ties with industry associations and professional bodies across Hong Kong, Macau, and Mainland China. We organised exchanges, hands-on experiences, and interactive sessions at the forefront of academia, commerce, and industry hubs for our members, injecting fresh innovation and energy into the sector.
In 2024, we also witnessed the collaboration between the Asia Gemmological Institute and Laboratory (AGIL) and Hong Kong Metropolitan University to launch Hong Kong’s first Bachelor of Science in Applied Jewellery Studies programme. This significant milestone marked the beginning of a new chapter in the academic development of gemmology and jewellery studies. We firmly believe that this initiative will inject new momentum into the future development of our field, while also providing a more comprehensive academic platform for gemmologists and nurturing highly skilled professionals for the jewellery industry.
Looking ahead to 2025, APGS remains committed to driving the development of gemmology within the Asia-Pacific region, with Hong Kong as a key hub. We will continue to promote professionalism and global expansion within the sector. In the coming year, the Association will further refine our membership system and enhance our service offerings. We encourage all gemmologists to join the APGS family so that we can continue to advance the gemmology profession, support the sustainable growth of the jewellery industry, and make meaningful contributions to the global gemmological community. Together, we will strive to elevate the field of gemmology and embrace an even brighter future for our industry in the Year of the Snake.
Finally, I wish you all a prosperous and successful year ahead, filled with new knowledge, skills, and achievements. May you enjoy good health, happiness, and success in all your endeavours.
Dr Dominic Mok
Founding President and President
Asia Pacific Gemmologists Society (APGS)
